During the tour, we take a break for refreshments at a local restaurant or café.

After the hotel picks up in Akureyri, we begin our day by stopping at Godafoss Falls on our way to Lake Myvatn. This magnificent waterfall plays an important role in Icelandic history, particularly in connection with the introduction of Christianity.

According to the Sagas, chieftain Thorgeir of Ljosavatn threw his pagan idols into the falls when Iceland converted to Christianity in the year 1000, hence the name Godafoss, meaning "waterfall of the idols".

From there we start our fantastic journey through areas of extreme contrasts, birdlife, flora, geothermal activity, geology, and saga. The area of Lake Myvatn is considered by many to be the most beautiful and at the same time the most catastrophic place in Iceland.

We will see the pseudocraters of Skutustadir. These "craters" were formed during volcanic eruptions when lava flowed over wetlands, eventually resulting in steam eruptions and forming these medium-sized craters.

We'll also walk in an interesting labyrinth of lava formations called Dimmuborgir. Meaning "Gloomy Castles", their dramatic structures are one of Iceland's most popular natural tourist attractions, reminding travelers of an ancient collapsed citadel. It's a world of fairy tales indeed.

The hot springs of Namaskard cover a rather large area. The pigments and minerals found in the ground make us think of a painter's palette. The whole place is filled with lots of bubbling mud pots, and steam coming out of the ground. The stench of sulfur is just amazing, adding to the feeling of being in an otherworldly realm.

Towards the end of the tour, we will visit the beautiful Myvatn Nature Baths for a relaxing geothermal bath in the silica waters of the so-called Blue Lagoon of the North.

The characteristics of this water are unique in many ways. It contains a large number of minerals, is alkaline and well suited for bathing. Due to its chemical composition, undesired bacteria do not thrive in the lagoon making chloride or any other disinfectant redundant.

Iceland is very popular as a movie and TV set location! Normally playing a role in creating a post-apocalyptic landscape. If something was filmed in Iceland - chances are it was around Lake Myvatn!

  • Tree of Life (2011) The opening scene from the Tree of Life showing the creation sequence is filmed throughout Mývatn, including Námafjall, and at Krafla Caldera.
  • Oblivion (2013) The film starring Tom Cruise spent 10 days filming in various places around Iceland! The remains of the large baseball stadium is actually played by the crater, Hrossaborg, which is found only about 30 min away from Lake Myvatn.
  • Game of Thrones (2013) films all over Iceland, and used Grjótagjá Hot Springs and Cave as inspiration for the famous John Snow and Ygritte cave scene. Some shots were partially filmed here but the majority had to be filmed in a studio, as the fumes inside the cavern were obstructing the cameras. The cave is unfortunately closed to the public.
  • Noah (2014) The epic biblical drama film is filmed almost entirely in Iceland, including around Lake Mývatn. Also featured are Lake Kleifarvatn, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and Reykjanes peninsula.
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) An intensive action scene between the Empire and the Rebels were filmed at Lake Mývatn, with the volcanic calderas Krafla and the bubbling mud pools at Námaskarð making an appearance.
  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Lake Myvatn, Krafla Volcanic crater, and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach create the backdrop for the spooky planet Eadu.
  • Fast 8 (2017) The latest Fast and the Furious film was shot in multiple locations around Iceland, including around and on the stunning Lake Mývatn. You may remember the scene which includes a car traveling through the ice of lake Mývatn!

After a relaxing bath, we head back to Akureyri where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
